The ISO 50001 standard for energy management (International Organization for Standardization, 15 June 2011) makes provision for an energy planning process.

Once an organisation has set up an energy management system, the ISO 50001 standard stipulates that it should implement an energy planning process. Energy planning aims to achieve continuous improvement in the organisation’s energy performance. It involves identifying activities that have an effect on the organisation’s energy consumption. Energy planning should be documented and follow a precise procedure.

1. Procedure

Energy planning begins with identifying the legal requirements in relation to the organisation’s energy consumption and energy efficiency. The organisation must be able to demonstrate that it is compliant with these requirements.

Once this has been done, the organisation can begin its energy review. In other words, it will assess its past and present uses and consumption of energy, based on measurements and other data. After this analysis, it should identify its Significant Energy Uses (SEUs), i.e. the facilities, equipment, systems, processes and people that have a significant impact on the plant’s energy performance.

 

2. Objectives and action plans

The organisation should identify the potential for improving its energy performance. This entails establishing an energy baseline for its energy uses and consumption. These energy profiles will help it set performance objectives, compare and account for deviations, and draw up action plans. This is an average over a given period and may be weighted on the basis of factors that affected usage, such as production levels and weather conditions.

The plant manager will be able to monitor his plant’s total consumption in kWh per tonne of finished product in order to monitor off-target consumption or identify best practices for consistently achieving the best results. Energy planning is also used for actions involving an investment, such as installing insulation on a steam network or replacing a boiler.

 

Energy planning will therefore involve setting objectives, such as improving the kWh per tonne, for example. To achieve them, the teams will have to draw up, implement and update action plans. It is a requirement to maintain documents setting out the following information: responsibilities, calendar, methods for verifying the improvement and methods for verifying the outcomes.
