1. Definition

SaaS stands for “Software as a Service”. It is a software application hosted on a supplier’s remote servers, not on users’ devices. Software developed based on the SaaS model is natively designed to work in web mode and optimised to run on the Internet. Users can access it via an Internet browser or company network, on their smartphones, tablets or computers, wherever they are. Customers do not buy licences to use a given version of the software: they rent the online version and it is up to date all the time.

SaaS is a universal solution and brimming with upsides. Starting with a practical one: installing the software does not involve rendering devices inoperative or otherwise inconveniencing users.

– Outsourced systems run in continuous delivery mode. Updates are automatic. So users have the latest version of the application every time they open it.

SaaS solutions are more efficient than local software. They run on powerful remote shared servers and do not depend on the condition the company’s computers happen to be in. Switching to SaaS means the supplier takes over maintenance and operations.

Storage is unlimited and there is no risk of losing data if a computer crashes. The data is kept in data warehouses.

SaaS software “de-siloes” data, the business applications that use that data, and organisations. APIs (application program interfaces) make it easier to develop tailor-made interfaces for each user, and web services can interconnect applications. So, using the same data, an operator can supervise the production process, the energy manager can keep track of performance, and the plant manager can check processes are under control and energy-efficient at any time. From an organisational standpoint, SaaS solutions foster interaction because everyone in the company is using the same solution.

SaaS applications are scalable. As they work in continuous delivery mode, users get new versions, including all the latest features, without having to wait for the company to update its version.

Security is unparalleled. First, because SaaS systems are hosted in ultra-secure data centres. Then because the data is backed up onto several remote servers (for redundancy). And then because suppliers have full-time specialists to deal with any risks of cyberattacks, are 27001-certified and have the appropriate security system. And data confidentiality can be optimised with dual encryption (in the server and on the user’s device). If a customer so decides, the developers, hosting staff and administrators will not be able to access its data.
